Sustaining the Lobster Population
Ship to Shore is committed to maintaining a healthy and sustainable lobster population, and we know that egg-bearing female lobsters are the direct source for ensuring continuation of lobster in the local waters.
Maine’s lobstermen participate in a mandatory v-notch program that originated in Maine and dates back to the early 1900’s. This program requires lobstermen to notch all egg-bearing female lobster prior to returning them to the water. This v-notch will remain through the next few molts allowing her to reproduce for several years to come.
It is illegal to possess a female lobster marked with a v-notch, and if caught, the female lobster should be immediately returned to the water. The State of Maine does impose significant fines if a fisherman is caught with v-notch lobsters.
Ship to Shore's Adopt a Lobster program lets you select a female lobster that has been caught but not yet notched, v-notch the tail yourself (with our assistance of course), and liberate the lobster back into our coastal waters. For your active participation in the adoption process, you will receive a “Certificate of Lobster Adoption” with your name and the date of adoption. Once the liberation process is completed, you will be the proud grandparent of many more generations of lobsters to come. Please note that a small fee is collected to cover the costs of the Adopt a Lobster program.
Our Adopt a Lobster program is educational, makes a wonderful gift, and supports the sustainability of the future lobster population. Thank you for supporting lobstering in Maine.
